While visiting the city of Baltimore, your student group will want to stop by the Maryland African American History Museum. Students will learn about the culture and its fascinating history. There are exhibitions and collections for students to view as well as fascinating educational programs offered at the museum. The exhibitions at the museum are unique and interesting, telling the story of African Americans from Maryland. The museum houses permanent exhibition galleries as well as special exhibitions. There are three permanent exhibition galleries. The students will learn how 200 years of slavery wrenched and at times broke the bonds of family and community among the African Americans in Maryland. These men, women, and children were torn from loved ones, they were sold to strangers. Even during these hard circumstances, the individuals developed tools to help regain these family bonds. Another gallery focuses on the accomplishments of Maryland’s African Americans in both art and education. There are interesting educational opportunities for students to experience at the museum. The group can take tours of the facility. They offer self-guided and docent-led tour options. Students can also experience the Journey History Theater. They will enjoy live performances that highlight the prominent African Americans in the museum’s galleries.
