Mayflower

During your visit to Boston you may want to explore the Mayflower. The original Mayflower sailed in 1620, but she no longer exists. However, the Mayflower II is a replica of the original ship. Students can climb aboard and learn more about the voyage and how sailors and passengers lived during the 1600s. The Mayflower II crossed the Atlantic in 1957. During the experience, the students will have the opportunity to examine several of the ship’s components. For example, they will look at the cramped quarters of the ship’s passengers. They will also see the “hold,” which is where the necessary items were stored such as food, clothing, and furniture. The group can also admire the spacious master’s cabin and compare it to the wet and windy accommodations of the sailors. Mayflower II has several interesting stories to tell and there are plenty of people to tell them to your student group. You will meet staff dressed in modern clothing that will speak from a present day perspective. The staff will talk about the original Mayflower, and the reproduction Mayflower II. During the time that the group is on board, you may see individuals dressed in period costume who will share their personal shipboard life. They will play the part of the sailors or passengers. Located beside the ship, is a dockside exhibit which traces the history and origins of the passengers as well as the navigation techniques used by the crew during the original voyage. The students will also have the opportunity to view vintage photographs that show the construction of Mayflower II and the 1957 Atlantic crossing.
