Old North Church

When your student group visits Boston you may want to stop by the oldest church building in the city, known as Old North Church. The group can take a tour of the facility and take part in one of the fascinating educational programs. There is also a gift shop with interesting gifts for the students to browse. The Old North Church became famous on the evening of April 18, 1775. There are a variety of entertaining educational programs for students of all ages to enjoy. For example, there is a Behind-the-Scenes Tour for students in fifth grade and above where the group will get a more in-depth look at the church. There are two areas included, which are the Bell Ringing Chamber and the Crypt. During the first part of the program, visitors will climb the stairs and have the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of the oldest set of change-ringing bells in North America. The bell ringing chamber is where Paul Revere worked as a teen. During the second half, the students will take a look at crypt artifacts, as well as learn how and why it was used at Old North. The tour is 30-minutes in length. Students in third through fifth grade can enjoy a program called “A History Mystery: Who Hung the Lanterns.” The group will use several methods to solve the mystery of who hung the lanterns on the eve of the American Revolution. Specifically, they will use historical documents, grave markers at Copp’s Hill Burying Ground, and a variety of clues found in Old North to investigate and find the answer. The program is a two hour activity.
