Adler Planetarium

During your student group tour to Chicago, the class should spend some time exploring the Adler Planetarium. The team can shop, visit the museum, and dine. This attraction was one of America’s first planetariums. There are interactive exhibitions, programs and events, and entertaining sky shows. Pupils of all ages will enjoy the experience.

The museum has several engaging exhibitions for your students to explore. Participants will find galleries such as the Clark Family Gallery, the Historic Atwood Sphere, Our Solar System, Planet Explorers, and Telescope: Through the Looking Glass. The Historic Atwood Sphere is known as Chicago’s oldest planetarium. The student group can take a live guided tour where you will identify stars and the constellations they form. The Telescope: Through the Looking Glass exhibit is one where the team will have the chance to look at a variety of telescopes and learn how individuals observed the sky before the invention. Participants will see telescopes such as the Italian trumpet-shaped telescope from the 1630s, a Grand Orrery hand-crafted planetarium from the 18th century, a colossal 22-foot-long antique telescope from 1675, and the modern Dearborn Telescope.

The students can also enjoy a live sky show during the visit. Participants can choose from shows such as Destination Solar System, Cosmic Wonder, Undiscovered Worlds, and Earth Moon and Son. During the Destination Solar System show, the team will take a tour of the solar system and also explore the hottest, coldest, and the most spectacular sights. The Undiscovered Worlds program tells the story of the search for new planets and examines the possibility of life beyond earth.
