Jewish Museum

The Jewish Museum on Fifth Avenue along New York City’s famed Museum Mile houses the largest collection of authentic Judaica displayed anywhere outside of Isreal. Founded in 1904 with just 26 donated objects, the Museum has grown more than a thousand-fold; its considerable treasures now comprise almost 30,000 items ranging from archaeological artifacts to works by today’s most intriguing artists. With a dedicated focus on both modern and contemporary art items and artifacts of Jewish history, its core exhibition, “Culture and Continuity: The Jewish Journey” is comprised of more than 26,000 items and is supplemented by regular rotating and special exhibitions, frequently interdisciplinary in nature. The collection, while established in the library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1904 where it was housed for four decades- did not go public until 1947, when he widow of a prominent trustee donated the family mansion as a display venue. This little-known gem in New York City offers guests a fantastically immersive illustration of the extraordinary diversity that has existed within the Jewish community itself throughout the ages. Wonderful permanent exhibition Archaeology Zone: Discovering Treasures from Playgrounds to Palaces lets children assume the roles of archeologists as they search for and discover clues about objects dating from ancient times to the present day. *Mission Statement: The Jewish Museum is dedicated to the enjoyment, understanding, and preservation of the artistic and cultural heritage of the Jewish people through its unparalleled collections, distinguished exhibitions, and related education programs. Using art and artifacts that embody the diversity of the Jewish experience from ancient to present times, throughout the world, the Museum strives to be a source of inspiration and shared human values for people of all religious and cultural backgrounds while serving as a special touchstone of identity for Jewish people
