Antietam National Battlefield

During the visit to Baltimore, your student group can see the Antietam National Battlefield. The battle was the bloodiest in American history. It took place on September 17th, 1862. There were 23,000 soldiers wounded, killed or missing as a result of this violent attack. If your student group plans on visiting the battlefield for one to two hours, the students can take part in various activities. For example, the Visitor Center contains a museum with fascinating exhibits for the group to explore. Another interesting activity is a 26 minute introductory film that is shown on the hour and half hour. There is also a store inside the museum with interesting merchandise. Students may also participate in one of the ranger talks and learn more about the history of the event. There is a self-guided auto tour of the area as well. The tour has 11 stops and begins at the Dunker Church. If your group is able to spend two to four hours at the Antietam National Battlefield, you may enjoy other fascinating experiences. For instance, the students can participate in a more detailed ranger talk. If you like to hike, there are several trails to explore. Here are some examples: Bloody Lane, the Cornfield, the Final Attack, Union Advance, and the Snavely Ford Trail. The group may also want to stop by the Pry House Field Hospital Museum and take in the sights of the exhibits and memorabilia. Students have the opportunity to participate in a fun scavenger hunt. They will learn about the famous historical landmark and also be entertained.
