Jennie Wade House | Student Travel

Jennie Wade House

On your student tour of Gettysburg, you may want to stop by the Jennie Wade House. It is dedicated in memory to Jennie Wade who was the only civilian who died during the battle of Gettysburg. The house is furnished with the original furniture from the cellar to the attic. It has been in operation since 1906. Jennie was only 20 years old at the time of the battle. She was kneading dough in her kitchen when a bullet pierced through two of the doors and claimed her life. Your student group can take a tour of the location and see the interesting furnishings that were common during the war. During the tour, you will be led by a guide dressed in period costume and well-versed in the history of the home. The students will also have the opportunity to view some fascinating artifacts that are on display from that fatal day in 1863. One of the artifacts displayed is the artillery shell that punctured the roof of the house and a floorboard with Jennie’s blood still on it. The tours are 30 minutes in length. In the spring and fall, a new tour begins every 45 minutes. The student group can also purchase items in the Jennie Wade Gift Shop. You will find items such as a Jennie Wade Doll, the Jennie Wade Story, and Jennie Wade’s Wooden House Shelf Sitter. The Wooden House is a wooden likeness to the Jennie Wade house. The item is a limited addition piece and truly collectable.
