Golden State Museum

An imperative on any Sacramento student travel agenda, the Golden State Museum treats its visitors to an exciting cross-section of California’s important history and unique contributions to our world through its fascinating series of exhibits, inspiring individuals all ages and walks to fearlessly pursue their own version of the “California Dream” and in doing so fashion a legacy benefiting the multitudes. “California Indians: Making A Difference” is created in Native voice, representing over 100 tribes across the state; the 3000 square foot gallery showcases the contributions of indigenous California peoples through a presentation of hundreds of artifacts, works of art, oral histories and an interactive Native language kiosk – the only exhibit of its kind, anywhere. The Museum’s permanent “California’s Remarkable Women” exhibit, inspired by former First Lady Maria Shriver, honors the achievements of extraordinary women of California; the masterfully crafted Sesquicentennial Quilt, designed in honor of the state’s 150th year and representing all its 58 counties, is truly a sight to behold. Temporary exhibits such as “California Missions: A Journey Along the El Camino Real”, “Sacramento: Homage to a River” and “Dig It! The Secrets of Soil” all promise to engage, enlighten and entertain. Outside, the colossal six-story “Constitution Wall” features dramatically sculpted words extracted from the California Constitution, each specifically chosen to move guests to reflection on the freedoms guaranteed all Californians; depending on the light and time of day, different words, punctuated by the wall’s natural color scheme, as drawn from the Golden State’s landscape palette of forest, ocean and desert hues, become more prominent. Come, visit the Golden State Museum, and see for yourself what’s so special about the 31st state!
