Jamestown Settlement

The Jamestown Settlement is a great place to take your student group as part of your visit to Williamsburg. There are a variety of activities for the students to explore that are both entertaining and educational. They also offer several tours and also have a fascinating museum. Students of all ages will enjoy this experience. Students can explore the museum where you will find galleries and exhibits as well as an introductory film. The galleries and film describe the cultures of the Powhatan Indians, Europeans, and Africans who converged in Virginia during the 1600s. The film is called 1607: A Nation Takes Root. The artifacts in the museum are from the 17th century. There are interpreters who are dressed in costume that will demonstrate daily life as it was during the 17th century. They offer a variety of educational programs and tours that focus on a number of topics. One of the options is known as the Government Leadership Tour. During the experience, the students will explore the Powhatan Village, the James Fort, and the 1607 ships. The group will learn about the chain of command on the ships and discover how the representative assembly established the model for American history. There will be hands-on activities during the tour. The program is two hours in length. Another fascinating program is the Jamestown Guided Tour which is over two hours in length. During the experience, the students will have the opportunity to tour the museum and recreated living history outdoor areas. While visiting the Powhatan Village, you can participate in activities such as grinding corn, scraping a deer hide, or making a canoe out of a log. The group will also learn about how natural resources were important to the Powhatan culture.
